About Empire Off Campus
It started with a problem I lived firsthand.
When I was a senior at SUNY Oneonta, finding off-campus housing was a mess. Students were scrolling through Facebook groups, landlords were posting into the void, and nobody had a real solution. The sites that existed — RentCollegePads and others like it — had price tags so high that only large property management companies could afford to market on them. Independent landlords, the ones with great houses and no corporate backing, were completely invisible. They needed a website.
So I built one.
IndependentOneontaHousing.com started as a simple idea: give independent landlords an affordable way to get in front of students, and give students a better place to find housing than a Facebook group. No big budgets required. No corporate listings crowding out the little guys.
Within months of going live that first year, I knew it had worked. Landlords were getting texts and calls from students constantly. Some of them told me that in all the years they had been renting, they had never been fully rented out so fast.
That success made one thing obvious. Oneonta wasn't the only place with this problem. Every SUNY campus has independent landlords getting overlooked. Every college town has students settling for whatever the big companies put in front of them because they don't know anything else exists.
Empire Off Campus is the next step.
Same mission, bigger map. We're taking the model that worked in Oneonta and bringing it to colleges across New York State. Affordable listings for independent landlords. A clean, simple search for students. No signup walls, no corporate gatekeeping, no price tags built for companies with marketing departments.
Still here for the little guys. Just a lot more of them now.
